About Us

Founded in 2005, the Clare Crusaders Children’s Clinic stands as a vital beacon of hope and a lifeline for families navigating the challenges of raising children with special needs in County Clare. The clinic was born out of profound necessity and parental love. Frustrated by a stark deficit in local, accessible healthcare services, a dedicated group of parents, including Howard Flannery and voluntary clinic manager Ann Norton, refused to let their children fall through the cracks of a strained healthcare system.

Opening its physical doors in Barefield, Ennis, in 2007, the charity set out with a radical, unwavering mission: to provide essential therapy and specialist treatments to children with special needs completely free of charge.

At the heart of the clinic’s daily operations is a profound commitment to early intervention and continuous care. Today, a dedicated team of professional therapists works alongside voluntary administrative staff to deliver life-changing treatments, including Speech and Language Therapy, Physiotherapy, and Occupational Therapy. These services are tailored to support children with a wide range of conditions, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, ADHD, and various developmental or physical disabilities. By removing the financial barrier to these critical interventions, the clinic ensures that over 450 children annually can find their voices, improve their physical mobility, and build the confidence and motor skills necessary to navigate daily life with greater independence.

“As the clinic looks to the future, it remains deeply rooted in its founding philosophy, driven by the generosity of volunteers and donors who believe that specialised care is a fundamental right, not a privilege.”

What truly sets the Clare Crusaders apart is the extraordinary community spirit that fuels its existence. For nearly two decades, the clinic operated as a self-financing charity, relying entirely on the goodwill of the public to meet its annual operating costs. This grassroots dedication achieved historic recognition when the Irish government acknowledged the clinic as an example of “national best practice,” resulting in a vital state allocation to upgrade its facility equipment and ICT systems. However, the true heartbeat of the clinic remains its community champions. The Clare Crusaders Running Group, famous for training hundreds of local runners for the Dublin City Marathon and international events, alongside the Clare Crusaders Cycling Club, work tirelessly year-round to raise the funds necessary to keep the clinic’s doors open.

Ultimately, the Clare Crusaders Children’s Clinic is more than just a medical facility; it is a testament to what a community can achieve when it unites for its most vulnerable members. From a small support group to a thriving, state-of-the-art clinic, the Charity continues to prove that with collective dedication, we can overcome systemic gaps and ensure every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
